2013 in review

December 31, 2013

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 7,700 times in 2013. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 6 trips to carry that many people.

Let Us Pray… by Lea Salonga

You know what, I’m tired of hearing that phrase whenever a tragedy strikes our country. I’m also tired of seeing it on my newsfeed whenever I open Twitter.

The phrase seems to give us permission to pass the buck on to God, the Almighty and Powerful, Omnipotent God, to take the responsibility away from us and fix everything while we sit back and watch.

Well, to all of you still on your knees in deep contemplation, I have news for you: GOD ISN’T GOING TO COME DOWN AND FIX THINGS FOR YOU.

My mother always had this mantra: God helps those who help themselves. She used it whenever she wanted me to get off my ass and do something. Yeah, you have to admire a woman who continues to survive in this world by virtue of her smarts and disdain for sloth. She’s always up and about, active and quick. Although she does say that the end of her life will be coming sooner rather than later (she’s in her 70s, but man, she doesn’t look it), the way she acts is much more proactive and less fatalistic.

Less fatalistic. Shouldn’t that be the way we start to look at things? More “get up and go” and less “bahala na”?

After reading about the bombed bus on Buendia, the numerous carjackings (two of which lead to 3 charred bodies), and the numerous deaths at the Eton Tower construction site in Makati, I had reached my threshold. One twitter denizen replied to one of my latest tweets with something like, “let us pray… pray…” I couldn’t resist the urge, so I tweeted back with, “Forget prayers, I want action.”

Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m as prayerful as anyone. I have received direct answers to my life questions by sitting in a church during a time of personal and professional crisis. My faith in God is strong, and has gotten me through some harrowing times. That said, I also know that God isn’t going to sing my songs for me, memorize lines and blocking on my behalf. Sure, I’ll acknowledge the gift and talents with which I was blessed, but still. I have to power the vessel that is my body in order to use the gifts wisely.

In short, I have to get off my ass and do stuff.

God’s gifts to each of us includes: a brain with which to independently think, criticize, plan (yeah, like make a blueprint), plan again (if plan A doesn’t work), and dream. We weren’t created to behave like lemmings, following the crowd jumping off a cliff. We weren’t created to passively sit and watch the world go by.

God helps those who help themselves. So get off your ass already.

Entourage S7 with Sasha Grey

June 22, 2010

We are a week away from the latest season of entourage which airs 27-JUNE-2010. For those of you who dont follow the show, (based from it’s Wiki page)

Entourage is an American comedy-drama television series that premiered on HBO on July 18, 2004. The series was created by Doug Ellin and chronicles the rise of Vincent Chase, a young A-list film star, and his childhood friends from Queens, New York City, as they navigate the unfamiliar terrain of Hollywood, California.

Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson serve as the show’s co-executive producers, and the show’s premise is loosely based on Wahlberg’s experiences as an up-and-coming film star.[1][2] The series deals with themes of male friendship and wild life in Hollywood. In accordance with this, numerous celebrities have guest-starred on the show.

You are really missing out on something if you are not fan of this show. I personally would rank this show on top of some of the best TV series of all time (Friends, Seinfeld). Apart from the new season, rumor has it that Vincent Chase (lead character played by Adrian Grenier) Will have a new girl friend. She is porn actress Sasha Grey. If you do not know ms. Grey, see image above and google her now for her magnificent role portrayal in Sasha Grey anatomy. lolz…

Unfinished business

June 16, 2010

Ever woke up one morning to the sounds dinosaurs destroying your front yard? That is what happened to me 2 weeks ago when I woke up to these, please see images above. Our baranggay is being renovated by Maynilad to improve(?) whatever they are improving. I posted a similar topic here a month ago and lo and behold, our roads are still not completely fix after almost 6 months of mud and dust. Friends of mine told me that TV Patrol (the flagship national network news broadcast of ABS-CBN in the Philippines.) featured our baranggay for all these never ending constructions. I do hope that we get to be featured again. The rainy season are here and soon the storm season. I think without further push from the government. Our roads will never be fixed in time.

Please spread this post so that our newly elected local officials can look into this matter. There might be monkey business going here.

If there was a tie in the election- Flip it!

May 12, 2010

Interesting enough. Iif there was a tie in the election, under Philippine law the winner is to be decided by drawing of lots or by a toss of a coin. Has it happened before? Apparently it did, see here:
Coin toss decides Philippine poll

Two candidates in the Philippines who got the same number of votes in a local election have settled the issue of who won by tossing a coin.

Bryan Byrd Bellang and Benjamin Ngeteg tied for the last of eight council seats in Bontoc, a town some 280km (175 miles) north of Manila.

They agreed to the coin toss, set down in local election rules. Mr Bellang called heads and won the seat.

Crowds in the town hall clapped as the two men shook hands after the result.

“I asked them if they wanted to break the tie by tossing a coin or drawing lots, and somebody in the crowd wondered if I was cracking a joke,” election supervisor Mary Umaming told the Associated Press news agency.

“I said those options were in the rules, and they agreed to flip a coin.”

Provincial elections supervisor Dennis Dimalnat said that the two candidates had set a refreshing example.

“I hope others would see the beauty of this kind of peaceful resolution,” he told AP.

Nationwide, Monday’s local polls were marred by violence. In total, about 87,000 candidates were contesting nearly 18,000 positions.

Police said that dozens of people died over the three-month election period and at least three people were killed on polling day itself. Observers in some areas spoke of voter intimidation and electoral fraud.
